Apfel is a free, open source command line tool that gives you direct access to the on device language model built into macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) on Apple Silicon Macs. Instead of requiring model downloads, API keys, or configuration, Apfel wraps Apple's FoundationModels framework and exposes it as a UNIX CLI, an OpenAI compatible HTTP server, and an interactive chat. It runs entirely on your device—no network calls, no data leaves your Mac.
